Description
Acetic acid is a clear, colorless liquid with a pungent odor. It is soluble in water and is characterized by high hygroscopicity. Ethanoic acid is highly corrosive, which is why it is usually used in diluted form. Different names are used for its solutions depending on the degree of dilution. A solution with a concentration of 70% – 80% is called acetic essence, while a solution containing 6% – 10% acetic acid is called food vinegar. Salsal Trading SA offers acetic acid in a concentration of 25% – 90%. Since this chemical reagent occurs in nature in acidic form, it has preservative properties used in food production, and is also a pH regulator and flavor enhancer.

In the food industry, acetic acid is a preservative with the number E260. It reduces the possibility of microorganisms developing and is also responsible for the characteristic sour taste in pickled products. Acetic acid is used in cheese production, as it allows for the proper coagulation of milk proteins and the separation of the resulting curd from the whey. In the confectionery industry, in combination with baking powder, it helps to achieve a light, airy consistency in the final product. E260 can also be found on the lists of ingredients of other food products, such as ready-made sauces, other dairy products and basic foods.
Acetic acid is a key substance in the chemical industry. It is a chemical reagent for the synthesis of various chemical compounds, and is mainly used in the production of vinyl acetate monomer. Ethanoic acid is also used in the creation of detergents and disinfectants and for water treatment. It is involved in the production of dyes or plastics.
This raw material is used in the textile sector for dyeing fabrics and producing synthetic silk. The ability of acetic acid to absorb moisture from the environment is key in these production processes.
Ethanoic acid is also widely used in the pharmaceutical industry and drug production. As a 1% solution, it can be an effective antiseptic. It is also involved in the production of painkillers and antibiotics.
