Calcium Chloride (E509)

Calcium Chloride (E509)

Description

Calcium chloride, a by-product of the Solvay process, is highly hygroscopic and effectively absorbs moisture. It is used as a desiccant, for de-icing roads and pavements, and as a concrete setting accelerator in construction. Its irregular granules require special care in storage and transport to prevent caking and loss of properties.

The shelf life of calcium chloride is four years. The product should be stored in clean, dry warehouses away from moisture, direct heat sources and incompatible substances.

Salsal Trading SA offers calcium chloride in 25 kg packages or in Big Bags.

The product is mainly used in the food industry as a food additive, an auxiliary substance (in cheese-making to correct the calcium content in milk) and as a pickling agent, preventing soaking, fermentation and rotting. It can also play an important role as an acidity regulator, increasing the firmness of fruits and vegetables. It works perfectly as a flavor enhancer.

In addition to the food industry, calcium chloride can also be found in dietary supplements due to its antibacterial properties. Calcium chloride reduces the permeability of blood vessel walls, which is why it has antihypertensive, anti-edematous, anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects, which are extremely useful in the production of medicines.

Calcium chloride is also used to protect stone and wood, to dry gas or to make cotton fabrics inflammable. In combination with sodium chloride, it is a substance that prevents the formation of ice on roads.
