In the cosmetics industry, sodium benzoate can be found in face and body washes, lotions, creams, cleansers, hair care products, eye creams, baby creams, and oral hygiene products. It is a preservative in some over-the-counter and prescription medications, especially liquid medications such as cough syrup.
It can also act as a lubricant in the production of tablets, making them flexible and easily dissolved when swallowed.
Larger amounts of sodium benzoate are also commonly taken to treat high levels of ammonia in the blood. A new application is adding it to plastics, such as polypropylene, to increase their strength and clarity.
Also used in the food industry mainly to inhibit the growth of bacteria and molds. It is used in carbonated drinks, fruit juices, jams, salad dressings, sauces and some dairy products such as yogurt to extend their shelf life and maintain freshness.
